Antique. Winged Angel with glass Eyes, c. 1790-1800, Naples, Italy.

Superb Cherub, sculpture carved from wood, original color design, original poliment-leaf gilding, beautiful old patina, gently cleaned, partly retouched. The angel sits on a stepped, ebonized wooden pedestal polished by hand with shellac. The pedestal is mobile.
Ca. maximum dimensions of the angel: width 22 cm (8.7”), height 37 cm, depth (sitting) 24 cm.
Ca. max. measurements, angel on the base: width 22 cm (8.7”), height 44 cm (17.3”), depth 24 cm (9.4”).

The Bible knows Angels as own beings, who belong to God's empire. The Genesis does not explicitly mention Angels, however it is pointed out in the Bible, that Angels existed already before the origin of the world and served God. It says: "Angels are creatures, who stand between God and man." During the Baroque period Angels used to become nude chubby child figures, often with wings, frequently appearing in both mythological and religious paintings and sculpture, especially of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Derived from personifications of love in Greek and Roman art, cherubs came to be used to portray cherubim in Italian paintings of the 15th century. In some churches many cherubs are to be found, which decorate the altars, organs, handrails, cornice and paintings.

Condition:

In view of the high age in good condition. Hands, feet and wings without breaks, no active woodworm infestation. Barely visible, there is a small hole from an old attachment at the top of the head.

Finely carved okimono made of Ivory, the fisherman Urashima Tarō sitting on a rock his left hand holding the little turtle Otohime. Sculpture signed on the base.

Travelling shrine with BUDDHA, EDO-period, dated about 1790 A.D. Japan.

Delicately carved travelling shrine, Edo period. AMIDA Buddha sitting, meditating atop a lotus-blossom throne. Inner sides of wings gilt with laquer-paintings with Kannon-portrayal. Outer sides with fine gold lotus flowers. Wings with metal claps. In a masterly manner carved wood, elaborately gilt and painting in original state, exceptionally well carved ! A true masterpiece of art. Original 18th-century travelling shrine with Amida Buddha.
