Rare antique Map of the World dated about the 16th century.
Sir Francis Drake's Route.
Small amazing Map of
the World in an oval Rocaille Cartouche, antique copper engraving, print
dated the end of the 16th century. The Map shows Sir Francis Drake's route
during his circumnavigation of the world in 1577-1580. Fine example of the
map, beautifully hand coloured, with a parrot in each upper corner, fruits
in the lower corners.
The map appeared in several editions of De Bry's
America Part VIII, beginning in 1599. The present example appeared at the
end of the 16th century in a Latin edition.
Sir Francis Drake (c. 1540 at
Tavistock, - Devon 27 January 1596 near Portobelo, Panama) was an English
sea captain, vice admiral, privateer, navigator, and politician of the
Elizabethan era. Drake carried out the circumnavigation of the world in a
single expedition, from 1577 to 1580. Still today as a seaman and navigator
he is considered an outstanding personality in the English Seafaring.
